Early Drawings
-
"Oh Dark Angel..."
1975; Pencil - A preliminary sketch for a near full-size oil painting, sold to a collector in Mt. Kisko, NY.
-
"A Gesture"
1971; Ink - From a high school art class, still one of my favorite drawings.
-
"For 'After""
1973; Pencil - A tree on the path from the dorms to the Hartford Art School, sketch for a gouache painting, lost in 2001 when my parent's house burned down.
-
"For 'Following The Slope'"
1973; Pencil. This is the tree seen in the background of the previous drawing "For 'After'". I did a gouache painting of this, which was lost in the fire at my parent's house.
-
"Near The Apple Barn"
1974; Pencil - Done on a sketching walk with my friend Paula Metallo, sketch for a watercolor sold to a collector on Long Island.
-
"Marcia's Pot"
1975; Pencil - Sketch for an egg tempera painting called "Marcia's Pot", sold to a collector in Hyde Park, NY. Marcia was the name of a marigold plant a class of kindergarteners gave me as a present after I student-taught in their class at Duzine Elementary School. Unfortunately, the great length of time it took to do the tempera painting outlived Marcia The Marigold!
-
"Mohonk"
1974; Pencil - Sketch of the 17th century cemetery in New Paltz, NY.
-
"Up The Hill"
1972; Pencil. This was done as an acrylic painting on birch panel, and was the first painting I ever exhibited at the college level. I took it to a portfolio showing at SUNY New Paltz when I was transferring in 1973. Some drunk kid decided to get into a wrestling match in my friend's dorm room, fell into this painting, and hit it with such force that the panel cracked and broke into three pieces. So it goes.
-
"My Feet"
1975; Pencil. Drawn in my parent's kitchen.
-
"Normie's Place"
1974; Pencil. The stairway in my high school friend Tom Ernst's house. Normie was a big black and white cat. This became an acrylic painting given to someone as a gift in 1975. In early 2001 I received an email from someone in Southern California to tell me she had just bought the painting in a Care-and-Share shop for $5. That made me laugh out loud. Definitely: so it goes.
