"Marcia's Pot"
Undated - probably the Spring of 1975
Pencil; 13-1/2 x 10"During my Junior year at SUNY New Paltz I used to volunteer "teach" in Helen Coutant's kindergarten class at Duzine Elementary School. One day her class presented me with a little marigold plant that they had grown, and I was told in no uncertain terms her name was Marcia The Marigold. I took the plant in her clay pot back to my room at "Our House" and decided to do an egg tempera painting of her. This was one of the preliminary sketches for that painting, which sold at a student exhibition during the Spring semester of 1975. Egg tempera paintings take a long time to do, and unfortunately Marcia did not survive to see the end of the project, so I ended up painting an empty pot.
