"UpThe Hill"
October 11, 1972
Pencil; 14 x 10"

This was done at The Hartford Art School in West Hartford, CT.  I was heavily into Edward Hopper at this time (I was also heavily into Robert Ryman, Robert Mangold and Frank Stella too) and it shows.  This was a preliminary sketch for an acrylic polymer painting done on a birch plywood panel, and was the first painting I ever exhibited at the college level.  The painting was destroyed a year later when I was showing my portfolio at SUNY New Paltz in preparations for transferring, when in a "friendly brawl" in my friend's dorm room someone fell on the painting hard enough to crack it into splinters.
