I am in the process of reading all of Colin Dexter's "Inspector Morse" novels. In all of them, Dexter begins each chapter with a pithy quote which is invariably echoed in the action of the chapter it heads. I just came across one of those quotes (Death is Now My Neighbour, Ch. 40) that made me laugh out loud:

"Important if true."  -- Inscription A.W. Kinglake wished to see on all churches.
