"Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley; Full Moon Press, 2008

For lack of better source material, I decided to use myself as the model for this cover painting. I have in mind to do a near profile of the monster, his face down and brooding, with catgut-sutured and iron-stapled seams opening up along the side of his head and neck, revealing Victorian arcana - rubber tubing and brass clockwork gears- among the muscle and ligaments. I started with a self portrait shot in a mirror, and then used the photo to draw a pencil rendering on tracing paper. I then transferred the pencil sketch to illustration board using graphite paper, and inked it in with a Rapidograph technical pen.
